While the kids were having fun digging in the small sand tunnel caves, Connor Fitz-Gerald found a 5-year-old girl named Alyssa Bostick who was fully covered in sand.
The little girl was able to dig a cave, but it collapsed and hid her for quite a while. Connor began to look for it by digging with his head.
The girl was unconscious, and sand was in her eyes, nose, and mouth. After he found her whole body, he started CPR on her right away and kept doing it until she woke up.
At the time, no adults were around to talk to Connor. He gave her CPR because he had seen it done on the TV show NCIS.
Tim Fitzgerald, Connor’s dad, said that he was happy that his son was able to save a life without the help of an adult who was a quarter of a mile away.
When her parents came back, they called 911 and rescuers told them that things could have gotten worse for her if Connor hadn’t been there.
Alyssa is doing well right now, and the National Youth Champion award was given to Connor by the American Legion’s helper.
Given how young Connor is, it’s amazing that he was able to stay calm and clear-headed in such a dangerous situation. Well done Connor!
